Liriodendron tulipifera 'Snow Bird'

Snow Bird Tulip Tree
(Tulip Poplar)

A full size and fast growing tree that provides dense shade. This form has an upright compact habit with pyramidal crown but appears less broad than the species. Early indications are that it will be half the width vs the height, at least while young. The growth rate is fast but not as rapid as the species or other selections.

Foliage:
The leaf coloration makes this rarity destined to replace variegated tulip tree in the trade. The large tulip shaped leaves are dark green with large brightly colored irregular margins. The initial color is rich yellow and when fully mature pure white. While the other variegated selection (Aureomarginatum) is similarly bold in its leaf pattern, it will fade by late spring making it almost indistinguishable from the species.
Snow Bird, does not fade and lasts all season. Fall color is a muted yellow.

Bark:
No pertinent ornamental traits.

Flower:
On older plants, the tulip shaped blooms are displayed on the outer branches in mid spring, with the leaves. The color is light green with a yellow-orange base and numerous rich yellow internal anthers

Fruit:
.

Size:
10-year height 30’ to 35’
10-year width 8’ to 12’

Zone:
4 to 9

Observations have shown that the generous amount of white in the leaves will perform better in light shade. We also have reports that once established it will adjust to full sun conditions in time.
